Our Millennium Wood

In 2000 Dr. and Mrs Pearse fenced off a corner of their land at Darracott for a Millennium Wood. We planted the trees we were given by St. John's Garden Centre and others we had been donated. It was a special occasion and the whole school took part.
During National Tree Week at the end of November 2001 we finally managed to see the trees we had planted the previous year. The reason we had not been able to visit earlier was because of the foot and mouth restrictions preventing us walking on farm land.
We were delighted that most of the trees were growing healthily and we identified trees such as ash, oak, sycamore, scot's pine, horse chestnut and aspen.
We went in our Family Groups and as well as looking at the trees we planted in March 2000, each Group also planted two or three more oak trees.
In September 2002 Class 4 did a survey of the trees and we hope to follow this up several times during 2003 so that we can see the changes as the year progresses and the seasons change. The photograph at the top of the page was taken in July 2005 so the trees are really beginning to grow now.
